Property Summary

Sherborne House is one of the oldest buildings in Lyme Regis - possibly the oldest. It is pleasant to live in and brimming with character.

The ground floor comprises entrance hallway, bedroom (which can also be used as an office) with fireplace, large utility room, and wet room.

The first floor includes two bedrooms, closet, bathroom, kitchen, and impressively large and interesting living room with fireplace and bay window overlooking the historic street (serving as a grandstand for the town's many events). The property features gas fired central heating.

The well-floored attic can be used as a guest bedroom.

The house was sensitively restored by a local architect, adding features such as skylights and revealing many details. A few examples:

* Masonry walls nearly two feet thick.
* Beams, some belonging to five huge "cruck" arches that framed the original farmhouse.
* "Chinese Chippendale" banister (see photo).
* Two fireplaces.
* The facade is surmounted by urns of Coade Stone (see photo), an amazing material invented by a Lyme woman. The central urn is a disguised chimney!

At the rear, an arboured passage leads to a garden room/studio (with water and electricity) and a "secret garden" with paved centre, raised beds, and trompe-l'oeil mirror.

There is parking nearby.

There is more about the house in the Lyme Regis Society's book "Historic Houses of Lyme Regis", and at

The house withstood the 1644 siege of Lyme Regis (the longest in English history), when it was on the front line. We found one of the cannonballs that may have bounced off it
